The leading cause of deaths/mortality in the community of San Jorge based on the death certificates filed in the Office of Civil Registrar and those seen by the MHO from January to October 2003 are shown in table below:

Morbidity:

The leading causes of morbidity in the community based on the number of consultations and referrals seen in the MHO from January to October 2003 is Upper Respiratory Tract Infection such as common cough and colds, which can be attributed to poor sanitation, overcrowding and lack of health education. Next, are Hypertension (HPN), Bronchitis, Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE), Influenza, Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB), Pneumonia, Hyperacidity, and Anemia. All of these diseases can be avoided through nutrition, hygiene and healthy lifestyle. (Refer to table below).

EDUCATION

In the educational scene, the municipality has thirty (30) operational schools including the Samar National Agricultural School (SNAS) which offers secondary education, four-year and two-year courses in collegiate level.

Out of the 30 operational schools, 24 schools offer primary education and 5 offer complete elementary education.

 

LITERACY RATE

Based on the household population by age group of NSO Census on Population, a total of 12,172 or 83.06% of the total population of 14,655 belongs to 5 years old and above, wherein 10,853 or 89.16% were literate and 1,319 or 10.84% were illiterate. (Please see table below)
