ECONOMY

INCOME CLASSIFICATION

5th class municipality.

 

LABOR FORCE

In the absence of an authoritative data from NSO, or any other agency, the Municipal Planning and Development Staff utilized the Table on Population by Age Group, to get the potential labor force by getting the sum of age group 15‑64, thus in 2004, the potential labor force is 7,861 or 53.64% of the total population of the municipality. The difference to the total population was considered total dependent age group from under 1‑14 and age group 65 and over, so that in 2004, the total dependent age group is 6,794 or 46.36% of the total population of the municipality.

 

ELECTRICITY

Data gathered from SAMELCO (Samar Electric Cooperative) Calbayog City reveal that out of 41 barangays of the municipality only 23 barangays have electric power connections, namely; Anquiana, Aurora, Blanca Aurora, Bulao, Buenavista I, Buenavista II, Erenas, Guindapunan, Himay, La Paz, Lincoro, Mabuhay, Mancol, Poblacion I, Poblacion II, Quezon, Cantaguic, Rawis, Rosalim, San Isidro, San Juan, Sapinit and Tomogbong. Although, record shows that not all households in the 23 barangays have electric power connection. While the remaining 18 barangays use kerosene lamp for lighting purposes.

 

INDUSTRIES

At present there are four (4) types of industries in the municipality, namely:

1. Cottage Industry
 

- furniture making, the market of which is only within the province.

2. Milling Industry
  - Two corn mills in the Poblacion

Nine (9) rice mills, three (3) in the Poblacion, two (2) in barangay Quezon, two (2) in barangay Aurora, one (1) in barangay La Paz, and one rice mill with palay drier in barangay Bulao.
3. Blacksmith
  ‑ the fabrication of bolo and low in barangay Erenas
4. Metal Craft/Welding Shop
  ‑ Four (4) welding shops, two (2) in barangay Erenas (SNAS) and two (2) in Poblacion. Both fabricates all kinds of metal crafts.

 

INVESTMENTS

Investment potential in the locality are establishment of Rural Bank, Hotel and Restaurant and Lodging Houses for tourist accommodation, mining (metallic group), quarrying of boulders, gravel and sand and others.

 

AGRICULTURE

As per data of the Municipal Agriculture Office, the major products of the municipality are rice, corn, vegetable, root crops, fruit trees and legumes.

 

TRANSPORTATION

The municipality of San Jorge is along the Maharlika Highway, where buses from Luzon to Mindanao passes through. Routes from Calbayog City, Catbalogan and thru Leyte is no longer a problem because of regular schedule trips of buses and jeepneys. The mode of transportation within the municipality are buses, jeepneys, pedicab tricycle and motorized tricycle.

Some of the populace for barangays along the Blanca Aurora river and Buenavista (Sobol) river uses banca (manual/motorized) as their mode of transportation wherein they uses river landing as their terminal.

Inland Waterways:

Blanca Aurora River is the main waterway used to transport people and goods from barangay to the town proper of San Jorge and to other places like Gandara, Pagsanghan, and even to the City of Calbayog.

 

Communication:

The Telecom office in the municipality has telegraph services and facilities. It has also a public telephone which can be used in transmitting your message anywhere in the Philippines and even abroad.

Cellphones are commonly used now a days in the locality with two servers, the Smart and Globe. It even reaches as far as Brgy Cantaguic in Sobol area, Brgy Blanca Aurora in the main river area and even in Brgy Matalud and Cagtotoog.

The government post office in the municipality has a total of two (2) personnel and one of them used to deliver mails within the Poblacion.

 

OTHER INFRASTRUCTURES

The locality was so lucky enough to be chosen as one of the recipient of JICA project, the Agricultural Development Promotion Program (ADPP). This project has three (3) components, the construction of farm to market roads (10.104 kms.) and four units concrete bridges (193.54 l.m.) under Roads and Bridges component, the Village Water Supply component (level II) and the Irrigation System component; two gravity type irrigation system (capacity=40has.), Bulao communal irrigation pump (capacity=130has.), sixteen units portable irrigation pumps for Bulao south (capacity=120has.) and others.

 

PROPOSED PROGRAMS, PRO.JECTS & ACTIVITIES

Revision of Comprehensive Land Use Plan and Development Plan, Construction of ABC Hall and Legislative Building, Rehabilitation/Improvement of Municipal Building, Rehabilitation/Improvement of Rural Health Unit, Construction of Covered Court, Construction of Public Market and Slaughter House, Construction of Circumferential Road, Acquisition of Sanitary Landfill (Garbage Dump Site), Acquisition of Garbage Truck, Development of Blanca Aurora Falls, Rehabilitation/Improvement of San Jorge to Tomogbong Road, Reforestation of identified timberland and others.
